Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
- Question: What are lubricants ?
Answer: Lubricants control friction and wear by introducing a friction reducing film between moving surfaces in contact. Usually liquid, they allow a film of fluid to separate moving parts. However, when there is metal to metal contact at start-up of in a process, it is necessary to prevent wear by adding chemicals to the fluid that prevent welding between the two surfaces - usually metal. There is also a need for the lubricant to resist corrosion when water enters the system and to resist oxidation - consequently lubricants usually contain anti-corrosion addives and anti-oxidants. - Question: What is mineral oil and why is synthetic oil different?
Answer: Mineral oil is derived from crude oils that are extracted from rock structures. That\'s where the term mineral comes from. Synthetic oils are derived from chemical synthesis - usually petroleum gas or from a catalytic cracking of mineral oils that produces more or less the same structures as chemically synthesised oils.
